A Calm Haven in the heart of Sicily
The original layout I made for our home changed completely after cleaning up the molded layers covering the walls. The stonework beneath it all was respectfully cleaned and exposed, transforming the perception of the entire space. The house was able to breathe again, washed up in a beautiful golden light. The stone wall became a calming natural element to look at, our domestic horizon.

I worked in a way to let air through as much as possible to avoid mold, and control heat in the summer. This was done through an airy remodeling of the staircase, and by using creative paneling for the bathroom, fitted with a small bathtub which could open completely onto the bedroom when desired.
I kept everything intact as much as possible, by removing, rather than adding. When needed, materials from the site would be redeployed in a different way. The bathroom was clad in excess marble from the house. The light fixtures were cleaned, and reused against a large mirror, thus amplifying space and light.
When I had to add new materials, I would choose natural ones as wood and rope, and calming colors that would not compete with the existing finishes: pink and cream terrazzo from the Sixties, mint green wooden windows, and the golden stone.
